Alcohol Policy
Objective
The QUT Student Guild Bars are aware, and concerned, at the risks presented to both staff and patrons in relation to the service and consumption of Alcohol. The following statements and procedures have been put into place to ensure that positive responsible service of alcohol techniques are applied in line with our philosophy of providing at all times excellent customer service.
The QUT Student Guild fully supports the development of an environment that promotes the responsible service of alcohol and to this end has and will continue to develop staff awareness through structured training.
The Guild Bars are committed to serving all of our patrons in a friendly, responsible and professional manner with due care being shown for the well being and safety of all patrons and staff.
In meeting this commitment the management and staff are empowered to screen all patrons to ensure that Minors are not on or in any areas which are out of bounds under the conditions or our license.
The objective of this house policy is to make sure that all staff are aware of the standards expected of them in their roll as bar attendants.
The Guild Bars have the same standards as any other venue in its treatment of patrons. Just because our client base is mainly student, it does not mean that we accept intoxication or bad behaviour as harmless student fun. In fact, the Guild Bar is more likely to remove a patron for intoxication or bad behaviour than most other venues. The Guild Bars feel that they play an important role in setting standards for acceptable behaviour on licensed premises.
The Guild Bars endeavour to ensure that Liquor Licensing Laws are adhered to by staff. All staff will be trained in the responsible service or alcohol.
The Guild Bars are a service that exists for the enjoyment of the University community who are primarily the students and staff of this University. Due to the fact that the venue is located on a University Campus it is highly likely that a Guild Bar is the first regular drinking venue for those students who have just turned 18 years of age. It is important that the Guild Bars takes seriously their role in promoting safe and sensible drinking practices for its members as most new drinkers will spend a lot of their social time at a Guild Bar.
It is important that the Guild Bars focus on an ambient and friendly atmosphere for its members and that an emphasis is placed on safety and security for its patrons. It is not in the Guild Bars' best interests to allow their facilities or services to deteriorate.
Identification will be asked for in the event that a staff member has reason to believe that a patron is under 18 years or age. The only accepted forms of ID for proof of age are the following:-
Passport
Drivers License (with photo)
18+ card
The Management will support staff members who refuse the service of alcohol to patrons who;
Are under 18 years of age
Are procuring alcohol on behalf of a guest or visitor who is under 18 years of age
Are behaving in a manner which would classify them as being "Disorderly"
Are Intoxicated
The Guild Bars will continue to educate patrons as to the standards of behaviour expected of them and will continue its campaign on managing their levels of alcohol consumption. This will be done in a variety of interesting and novel ways in order to be most effective in an already heavily academic environment.
The Guild Bars will not serve double or triple nip beverages. Clearly those patrons who wish to consume alcohol in this way are intent on becoming intoxicated quickly. It is not the intention of the Guild Bars that patrons become deliberately intoxicated. Quick consumption of alcohol can result in an unexpectedly high level of intoxication before the total amount of alcohol consumed has taken effect. This increases the patrons risk of alcohol related injury or illness. Jugs of spirit mixes will contain no more than five full nips of alcohol.
The Guild Bar has a range of facilities and services that will assist all patrons to enjoy their time with us, these include:
Taxi numbers and pick up directions posted at the phone
Complimentary chilled water available at the bar
The availability of food at all times whether from the BBQ, Bar or snack machine
Availability of Alcohol reduced and alcohol free beverages
